What is Allergic Rhinitis? How is it treated?

Dr. ozbarsut

Allergic Rhinitis is a disease caused by the body’s foreign body reaction to some of the substances we take in through the airway. It causes an increase in antibodies and mediators such as histamine against the allergen.

As a result of these reactions, fluid permeability in the nasal mucosa increases, triggering itching, sneezing and nasal nasal discharge.

We can think of the following;

We didn’t used to have so many allergic reactions in the past, why has there been a big increase in the disease in recent years?

In my opinion, the cessation of eating natural foods for any reason whatsoever (especially natural yeast) and the changes in the immune system caused by the preservatives and synthetic substances taken in ready-made and fast food are some of them. In addition, the high humidity in Antalya increases the risk of mold, yeast and mites.

Another handicap is the problems caused by air conditioned heating. Air conditioning both increases the particle density in the air and multiplies the severity of allergic rhinitis due to its effects on the respiratory tract.

What can we do with allergic rhinitis?

First of all, it is simplest to avoid common allergic factors as much as possible. Air conditioning that increases risk factors, not using products with high potential to harbor mold, yeast, mites such as blankets, fleece (especially in winter months), not using products with high potential to harbor mold, yeast, mites, and periodically wetting the bedroom with a wet cloth can be a few of them.

Medical Treatment

All the medications administered are not a cure, but only help to control the symptoms. Based on my clinical experience, I don’t think allergy tests are of much use. Tests are usually performed against 17-20 substances, but 50-60 thousand allergens are mentioned for Antalya. A positive result against some substances in the allergy test does not necessarily mean that all of them are present, nor does not necessarily mean that you are not allergic.

Considering that the micro and macro living structures in our environment, which we call flora, are very different regionally, it is another handicap how much allergic tests from abroad will overlap with us.

Rhinolight in Allergic Rhinitis Treatment

Considering the inadequacy of medical treatments to suppress allergic rhinitis, the necessity of regular use and the fact that drugs, no matter how safe they are, are ultimately chemical substances; the search for alternative methods and research continues. Rhinolight, which has become widespread in Antalya, is one of these alternatives. The working principle is that UVA and UVB rays are applied to the nasal mucosa with certain sessions and the reaction to allergic rhinitis is suppressed. There are no reported side effects and it can be used with moths even in pregnancy.

Success rates are quite high. Reducing nasal discharge, controlling the frequency and severity of sneezing, eliminating nasal congestion, minimizing nasal discharge are some of the effects. Although there are application differences, we apply 5-6 sessions every other day in the first year and 1- 2 sessions after 1 year.
